Isla Fuerte is a mile and a half long and just short of a mile wide, but there is no lack of adventure on this little island. The island is small and simple, yet full of quaint hotels to rest, beaches to enjoy sunsets and coconut drinks, and trails to explore the flora and fauna that make the island special. It is the perfect place go for a soul reset.

  1. Restful lodging experience at Eco House Hotel

The hotel is set right on the edge of El Bajo, a crystal bay perfect for sunrise swims. After arriving in Monteria, a local transportation service helped coordinate boat transportation from Paso Nuevo that dropped me off directly in front of the hotel. Eco House is the perfect spot for conscious travelers who want to support local, sustainable initiatives. There, you will find total peace and quiet, only hearing the sounds of nature that slowly begin to reset your soul. The hotel offers a great on-site restaurant as well as many local tours and guided activities. You never really have to leave.

P.S.- There is also a peacock who will make a daily morning wake up call.

  1. Guided walking tour around the island

As someone who loves getting a good walk in wherever I go, this guided tour that traverses the island is a must. A local guide will meet you at your hotel and take you exploring the different trails and beaches. You will see the massive mangrove trees, lots of strange little oceans creatures, and maybe even a sloth or two. It is best to do this with a guide because, although the island is small, the trails can be tricky. The walk is not intense in difficulty but quite long and very warm. Bring water, sunscreen, and bug spray.

  1. Wakeboarding and other water activities with local guides

Local company Isla Wake School offers the best wakeboarding experience on the island no doubt. They will pick you up at your hotel and begin the training and teaching portion of the experience. The teachers help you gain confidence and skills to stand up on the board and make some unforgettable memories. I scheduled my session in the afternoon and was able to see the sunset on San Diego beach as we finished up our time. Isla Wake School also offers other activities like a bioluminescent plankton tour at night. These guys help create a personalized and authentic experience on the island that only locals can do.
