Colombia's Coffee Region: tourist traps or attractions?

Visiting the Coffee Region can be tricky. It is simultaneously easy to fall into the tourist traps while being tempted to avoid some of the awe-inspiring tourist attractions. There is so much to do and see here, and I encourage you to explore and find your own special places. However, starting to plan an itinerary can feel quite overwhelming, so to help get you started here are my favorite to-do's in a few areas of the "Eje Cafetero", the famous coffee region in Colombia.
Santa Rosa
These hot springs in Santa Rosa de Cabal are a must. These hot springs are a popular tourist attraction, and in my opinion, should definitely be visited if possible. I ordered my ticket online before leaving Pereira and the public transportation easily dropped me off right at the entrance. Bring a book, a change of clothes, and some cash for lunch and enjoy the day. It is a peaceful gem and seeing it in person is worth it.
Filandia
This small town is known as one of the most beautiful towns in the Coffee Region for a reason. Filandia is small, quaint, and remains authentic while also offering a wide range of experiences in activities, food, and shopping. If you are an ice-cream lover like myself, stop in at Pailart- Helados de Paila, traditional hand-churned ice-cream made in a large bronze basin. For a plethora of unique artisan souvenirs and goodies, visit the main strip near the church square and browse gorgeous handmade products like bags, sweaters, and jewelry while also tasting all the handmade treats and products along the street. Dinner and a view at La Remesa, Colombia-Mexican fusion restaurant with a spectacular view of the area plus top-notch birria tacos and cocktails is my favorite choice for food. To wrap up the day, grab some arroz con leche from Las Delicias de Quinnis, a local who sells straight out of his house (text him in advance to save your treat!).
Salento
Salento is full of tourists, as it should be. How can you visit the Coffee Region and miss the Cocora Valley and all its beauty? When you first arrive, head to the main look out point just a few blocks from the church. You can grab a great coffee or pastry on the way down at Coco Bowl. If hiking is your thing- plan for the "long way" hike and spend most of your day exploring the valley with a local guide who will show you the ins and outs of this magical place. My local guide, Nicolas, also works with his family's local hostel, Atardecer de Salento, which offers a simple and cozy option for staying the night. Finally, grab a handmade avocado chocolate bar from Sueño de Fresas famous chocolate shop.
Pereira
Personally, I found Pereira was a bit of a sleepy city but nonetheless ready to offer some special experiences. Staying at a traditional farm house, or finca, is a great way to enjoy the nature and peace right outside of the city center. While in the city, do not miss the famous "Calle del Encuentro" near the San Jose cathedral which is great for having a drink, taking pictures of local art, and browsing indigenous hand made pieces. A horse back ride to see the country side is a must with Cabalgatas El Palomar, which offer an afternoon tour that ends around sunset and will surely leave you appreciating the natural beauty that Pereira has to offer.
All in all, the Coffee Region is a fantastic option for nature lovers and culture enthusiasts alike. It offers a wide variety of activities and options, can be budget friendly, and will definitely give you a picture of traditional life in that particular region of the country.
